A Rich History
Populated by Swedish immigrants in the late-1800s, Cambridge has grown from a hard-working farm community to a vibrant regional center. In recent years, it has become a hub for towns along the I-35 and US 169 corridors. Major retail anchors, a concentration of government services, highly respected schools and an exceptional medical complex fuel its growth.

Hard-Working Swedish Heritage
Cambridge was founded in 1866 by New England settlers, who gave the town its illustrious name. The community was a magnet for Swedish immigrants, who brought with them a strong work ethic and rich heritage. This heritage is still celebrated today.

Flourishing Industry
By the early 1900s, the "City on the Rum River" had grown to 258 people. An industrious place, Cambridge operated a brick factory, potato starch factory, flour mill and wool spinning mill. It also boasted its own electric lighting plant and long-distance telephone system -- rarities in most Minnesota towns of the day.

Visionary Leadership
The population grew slowly but steadily throughout the next five decades. In the late 1950s, a group of visionary business owners and community leaders formed the Cambridge Business Development Company. Its goal was to diversify the area's agricultural economy. One of the earliest private economic development efforts in rural Minnesota, the company focused on creating good-paying jobs, business opportunities and a stronger tax base. Today, it's one of many Cambridge organizations committed to sustaining healthy, steady economic growth.
